Finnish Midsummer is full of verdancy, magic and sunlight

At Kettukallio Experience farm we celebrate traditional Finnish Midsummer with a smoke sauna, refreshing swim, bonfire and tasty grilled food. You will hear stories about Finnish Midsummer traditions and magic. We help you to make a flower crown for yourself to enable ”swim like Tove Jansson” (author of Moomin books) in a forest pond if wanted.

After having a relaxing sauna, it´s time to barbecue. Finland is a haven of clean and pure air, water and food and the long summer days have enhanced the aromas of vegetables and berries. We´ll enjoy a very traditional Midsummer dinner cooked on open fire and served outside. Sausages are made by local producer.

Finns have celebrated Midsummer with a bonfire (kokko) for decades. You are able to be part of this old tradition and have some tasting dessert at the same time. We´ll admire the incredible Midsummer sunlight: sun is never really going down but changing colour from bright sunlight into warm, reddish-yellow light.

Please note: Participants are advised to wear comfortable and warm clothing and good shoes. You need also a swimming suite.

How to get there: Kettukallion Elämystila is located 74km from Helsinki and the ride takes 1,5h. Not very good public transportation to this destination.

Day in Finnish nature and smoke sauna experience

Program:

Departure from Helsinki to Karkali in the morning. The bus ride will take ca 1,5h.

Torhola Cave. It is 500m walk to the cave from the parking lot. The Torhola Cave is the largest limestone cave in Finland and about 30 metres long in total. 
The area is surrounded by a forest rich in many rare plant and fungus species.

Karkali Strict Nature Reserve. The 2-km long nature trail in Karkali Strict Nature Reserve will take us to a natural spring that is used by local people and many Karkali visitors to drink water. Along this trail you can find out more about the diverse natural features of the lush forests. There is a beautiful meadow where grass is cut once a year to keep the area open and favourable for many flowering plants, butterflies and other insects. The guide will tell you about the history of the area and favourable climate and the rock foundation which are providing special environment for flora and fauna living in the area.

Walk back to the bus and continue to Kettukallion Elämystila homestead 13km (~20 min drive).

Kettukallio Experience Village is built amongst Finnish nature. You can see beautiful woods reflected from the forest pond and enjoy the silence of the nature. There´s plenty of rustic tools and other items all around so there´s a lot of things to wonder and watch.

Dinner is served in the idyllic lapp hut. Dinner is cooked on open fire just for you. Dinner includes starter salad based on finnish vegetables and main course: blazed salmon, baked potatoes, grilled vegetables and sauce. After dinner we offer you coffee or tea cooked by fire.

Smoke sauna and a hot tub. Then it´s time for sauna. We have a traditional finnish smoke sauna, where you can take your time enjoying the refreshing atmosphere. Smoke sauna is the origin of our everyday sauna. Right beside the smoke sauna ther is a hot tub where you can sit and relax listening to the nature. The hot tub has room for 8 persons.

Supper. After the sauna there´s Karelian pies with egg butter to eat. Supper is served in a warm room next to the smoke sauna.

Transportation leaves from Kettukallio about 19.30 and return to Helsinki is about 21.00.

Smoke sauna experience

We give you a chance to experience traditional Finnish smoke sauna. 

It is the origin of today’s Finnish everyday sauna. Right beside the smoke sauna there is a hot tub for sitting in and relaxing while listening the nature. 

Sauna has room for about 15 persons at the same time and the hot tub has a room for 8 persons.

Price includes towels.

Smoke sauna is ready for use from 4pm to the late night.
